3/26 Top 10 Comments

Let’s get it on. How sweet it is to be Motown week as it is always my favorite week…until no one chose Stevie Wonder BUT Megan. I like Marvin Gaye of course but some of them could have done better with Stevie Wonder like Matt and Kris. Anyway, let’s get it on.

Matt Giraud – Absolutely the best song for him. It was smooth, crisp and I didn’t know Matt could command that stage like that because I thought using the piano too much would make him forget how to act without it. I love his vocal runs and how subtle it really was. The end bit was just amazing. It started well, stayed in that level and ended great. Best performance of the night, and I haven’t even seen everyone else.

GRADE: 1.0 — Consistent performances from Matt. He truly has the potential to outrun Gokey, Lambert and definitely Rounds.

Kris Allen – Kris picks Marvin Gaye as well and goes back to his trusty guitar again like Matt to his piano. He also picks a feel good song…see a pattern?
(Man in the Mirror – soulful, Remember the Time – feel good, Make You Feel My Love – sensitive, How Sweet It Is – feel good) For me, I think it’s a good choice to pick this song as it’s one of my favorites and it’s simple. I agree with Kara that he really made the song his. I love the comfort zone that I go into with it. And the ending note is really good. So many ways to end it and he picked the perfect one. He really has the potential to be a frontrunner.

GRADE: 1.0 — Consistent performances from Kris as well. He’s gotten a 1.0 from me the past few weeks. So I think all he needs now is more self-belief that he can outrun Gokey, Rounds and Lambert.

NOTE: I wish they both did Stevie Wonder but Marvin Gaye suited them nonetheless. Matt could have done Knocks Me Off My Feet and Kris could have done If You Really Love Me. If they pulled that off, they’d get over grades that I can’t measure anymore. But oh well, now I’ll never know.

Scott Macintyre – I love You Can’t Hurry Love but I hate how it started. I also don’t think the song suits him. I love how the background singers are in the back of the piano. It just seems awkward and he really had a lot of pitch problems. I agree with Kara in that he lacked execution and it is true that good ideas can’t be good if they are not executed properly. And you know what, I think the blind thing is just a ploy. I think he’s NOT TOTALLY BLIND. How can he be one with the stereotypical problems of the color pink?

GRADE: 4.0 — He wasn’t that dismal. But it did seem awkward and really lacked execution.

Megan Joy – OK, it’s the only Stevie Wonder song on the show. Well, I love how Smokey says that she is one of the most original. Well he is right. But the performance was a complete and utter mess. (Am I channeling Cowell?) I agree with Randy that it is a train wreck. I still love her but she did a dismal job. And also, the song doesn’t fit her. It would fit someone else. I love how she looks though. 🙂

GRADE: 5.0 — I love her but that was complete fail. At least she has her quirkiness and beauty (did I just put these two in the same sentence?) for others to vote for her.

Anoop Desai – Anoop is now aware that the only chance he has is if he sings sentimental songs. Take note, sentimental not soulful. This is because he needs to show off that he is a good singer. Last week was great but I didn’t want another sentimental performance from him. I miss the upbeat Anoop we saw in hollywood week. And obviously Smokey loves the song…duh…it’s his song. But apart from my personal bias that he’s trying too hard, he did sing it well but it just felt boring to the nth level… He should step his game up. He needs more confidence and creativity. It’s better than karaoke but just that.

GRADE: 2.0 — It would have been higher but I found it boring. He needs more energy! He has to turn it on next week like Randy says.

Michael Sarver – He started OK but I honestly don’t like this guy anymore. When he got to the last BEG in “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” he just cracked. Also, Paula is really right that it really was too karaoke, loungy and etc. It just didn’t sound good. I’m with Simon that I wanted it to end already. He really doesn’ have a chance of winning. And not many booing proves this point. He also doesn’t have the chops for the song because it is a BIG song. It was awkward on him too.

GRADE: 5.0 — He sung below par from everyone else. And unlike Megan, I don’t like him.

Lil Rounds – She is obviously the diva voice of the batch but she isn’t at par with the past ones. I love the new MOTOWN-inspired hair. Well, she has the chops for the song but not the soul of it. She was flat soulfully and screaming at points and it wasn’t that consistent. She should have chosen something with a moment like what Simon said.

GRADE: 2.5 — Better than last week of course but she did not nail the song. What Paula is saying is nonsense. She needs to blow everyone away and she really is choosing the wrong songs.

Adam Lambert – Adam picks another Smokey Robinson song. He is sporting a very MOTOWN hairstyle as well. And what can I say, this is a great song and he did give the song justice. And honestly, after watching it, it touched my heart. I wanna deduct points because he sounded too much like Cher but he did extremely well. And I take it back, this is the best performance of the night.

GRADE: 1.0 — Just woah. Funny though that Kara said she has 6 words for Adam but it was 8. Probably she was thinking “tonight” but instead said “of the night”… but anyway, he showed he’s a star. He finally showed me that he can have raw emotion. Really, best performance. I won’t buy his album though.

Danny Gokey – He lacked some energy at the start but he made up for it by the middle. I think it was good enough. Danny did what he does. He should have followed Smokey’s advice though. I say it’s OK. It’s not bad.

GRADE: 1.25 — He should have did something like he did in PYT. His energy level there was hot! But this is just an OK performance from him.

Allison Iraheta – I think she gave the most relevant, most current, dopest performance of the night. Adam may have the most raw performance but this performance blew the roof off. Lil could have sung this better but her loss. I loved the last note even if it wasn’t perfect. It was really upbeat. Great job.

GRADE: 1.0 — Great performance. Outstanding.

I think all this studying is getting to me and making my posts much longer than it should be. But oh well, this is break for me from all the monotony of studying econ. Go Figure! Bottom three: Megan, Scott and Sarver. In my opinion, Sarver is leaving.

Here’s my scoresheet since the Top 13. I didn’t include the ones who’ve left:

Performer Top 13 Top 11 Top 10 Average
Kris Allen 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00
Matt Giraud 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00
Allison Iraheta 1.25 1.50 1.00 1.25
Adam Lambert 1.00 2.00 1.00 1.33
Danny Gokey 1.00 2.00 1.25 1.42
Anoop Desai 2.50 1.00 2.00 1.83
Megan Joy 2.25 1.00 5.00 2.75
Lil Rounds 1.00 5.00 2.50 2.83
Michael Sarver 2.00 3.00 5.00 3.33
Scott Macintyre 2.00 5.00 4.00 3.67

Bottom Three Overall for me: Rounds, Sarver and Macintyre

Rounds is in the bottom three because she’s been picking wrong songs since last week. I hope she does pick better songs next time.
