The Swan Performances

The top 2 have performed their swan songs. What is surprising is that the reprises are better than the other songs they had to sing. But then again, it’s Simon Fuller who chose the other two and the last song was written by none other than Kara DioGuardi.

Adam Lambert

Mad World Reprise: Both Adam and Kris picked one of their moments on the show. In terms of this from the original performance, this was actually a bum. For the first time, Adam’s pitch problems due to vocal strain have become more apparent. I noticed it in prior weeks but lately, it’s become worse. Also, lots of other things were missing. I didn’t feel a connection this time around and felt it was a bit too theatrical. The phrasings seemed worse than its glorious predecessor. But it wasn’t a complete mess. It was just worse than the former.

Breakdown: P:7 O:5 A:10 T:8 D:10 S:10 C:17 R:20 B:3
Total: 90/100
GRADE: 1.5 — I give credit to Adam for the lighting and the wardrobe

A Change is Gonna Come: Not only was his pitch getting worse but his lower register is finally revealed to be a vocal mess. And from going to that lower register to those passagios, it soon became bland. I disagree with the judges at how that was great. In truth, I did not like the arrangement much.

Breakdown: P:7 O:9 A:8 T:8 D:8 S:10 C:20 R:20 B:0
Total: 90/100
GRADE: 1.5

No Boundaries: Man, did Kara screw up or what. The song didn’t suit Adam or Kris as much as they tried to infuse their styles to the song. The song is too majestic for both the glam rocker and the acoustic rocker. And as an added minus to Adam, the vocal strain got to him the worse here because his falsettos became inconsistent, his lower register was bad, and his timbre became more shrill than usual. I will not bash Kara’s song anymore because that’ll be too space consuming, but it’s really what drived both Kris’s and Adam’s performances down.

Breakdown: P:7 O:6 A:6 T:7 D:6 S:10 C:20 R:20 B:10
Total: 92/100
GRADE: 1.5 — It’s Kara’s fault that their scores suffered so I’m giving both Kris and Adam 10 points bonus. But you can see how dismal both performances were once I show Kris’s breakdown.

Kris Allen

Ain’t No Sunshine Reprise: There’s something magical about Kris. It is amazing how his first moment is surpassed by this one. Sure, at first glance, the song is what I would say the same but he amazingly changes up the phrasing in a way I can’t pinpoint that draws out more emotion from the song. I don’t know how he did it but he made it more compelling, more heartfelt and the best performance of the night! In WhatNotToSing.com, he got 85 in the first one, and an 89 in this one. Not only is it the first REPRISE to surpass the original but the rating has reached the Top 40 rankings in the whole 8 seasons of Idol!

Breakdown: It’s perfect, do I need to break it down?
Total: 100/100
Grade: 1.0

What’s Going On: This new arrangement reminds me of She Works Hard for the Money because of the same set of instruments. But the sound is much lighter and so easy on the ears. However, Kris’s lower register suffers like Adam. It’s interesting how both he and Adam had the same sort of pitch problems. But it really suited his style and was just amazing!

Breakdown: P:7 O:10 A:10 T:8 D:10 S:10 C:20 R:20 B:2
Total: 97/100
Grade: 1.0 — What, I have a thing for bongos. HAHAHA.

No Boundaries: Kris actually did better with his pitch here. He did have some pitchy problems but he was obviously straining with the high notes. Yes, he reached them but he sounded tired. The timbre was just not right. But nonetheless, the other bad things about the song I attribute to Kara.

Breakdown: P:7 O:6 A:6 T:8 D:6 S:10 C:20 R:20 B:10
Total: 93/100
GRADE: 1.25 — See how low it really is? I mean, worst performances all because of Kara. I really had to alleviate their grades because of Kara’s blunders. Oh well. So here’s the breakdown of grades:

If you noticed, the scores are close but for this finale, I’m confident Kris won. I got a meager 224 votes in as of now because the lines are awfully busy. But looking at dialidol, it seems that Kris will win.
